What to watch in cinemas this week | March 20–26
A Complete Unknown, Mickey 17, Black Bag, The Alto Knights, and The Last Showgirl.
Almost every week I provide a somewhat-curated list of films to see in cinemas. Meant as more of a resource than a weekly essay, you can refer to this series whenever you feel like going to the movies. Also, can check out previous weeks’ selections because those films might still be in theaters.

Still in cinemas this week
A Complete Unknown
like other Oscar nominated films, is still in cinemas (at least mostly in Germany). It quickly grew to be one of my favorites of the year after a second viewing. If you like Bob Dylan and/or Timothée Chalamet, head to the cinema.
Mickey 17
was only just released in both the USA and Germany last week, and I highly recommend. It follows in the B-movie category of Bong Joon Ho’s non-Korean dramas, most notably Okja and Snowpiercer. This was one of my favorite viewings at the Berlinale, hoping to watch again soon so I can write a proper review.
Black Bag (Steven Soderbergh)
dropped this last week in the USA. It appears to be a Mr. & Mrs. Smith type film directed by the Oceans guy starring Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett.
Plot summary: When his beloved wife is suspected of betraying the nation, an intelligence agent faces the ultimate test – loyalty to his marriage or his country.
Mid-May German release.
American releases
The Alto Knights (Barry Levinson)
is the kind of film that Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav hopes to bring back people from the dead with: starring Robert De Niro in two roles in make-up making him look older than his current 81 and directed by an even older guy. I will go see it nonetheless.
Plot summary: Two of New York’s most notorious organized crime bosses, Frank Costello and Vito Genovese, vie for control of the city’s streets. Once the best of friends, petty jealousies and a series of betrayals place them on a deadly collision course that will reshape the Mafia (and America) forever.
Also released in Germany this week.
German releases
The Last Showgirl (Gia Coppola)
can finally be viewed in German Kinos; the long awaited return to prestige screen of Pamela Anderson. As I wrote for its American release two months ago, this “is another film from one of the Coppolas (granddaughter of Francis, niece of Sofia, first cousin once removed of both Nicolas Cage and Jason Schwartzman).”
Plot summary: When the glittering Las Vegas revue she has headlined for decades announces it will soon close, a glamorous showgirl must reconcile with the decisions she’s made and the community she has built as she plans her next act.
