Each week I provide a somewhat-curated list of films to see in cinemas. Meant as more of a resource than weekly essay, you can refer to this series whenever you feel like going to the movies. Also, can check out previous weeks’ selections because those films might still be in theaters.
(Note: the week after Glicked, and before Christmas, is never a good release date. Nonetheless, here’s a couple picks before the insane, upcoming Christmas day release of Babysferatucompleteunknowntalist (Babygirl, Nosferatu, A Complete Unknown, and The Brutalist)?).
Recommendation of the week
Nickel Boys (RaMell Ross)
is the top film of 2024 from my two favorite film critics, who never agree. Adapted from the 2019 Colson Whitehead novel, Nickel Boys plays with form and content in an entirely new an exciting way, from what I’ve heard.
Plot bio: Chronicles the powerful friendship between two young Black teenagers navigating the harrowing trials of reform school together in Florida.
No German release date yet.
American release
September 5 (Tim Fehlbaum)
is the latest “wasn’t journalism from the 1970s great” film, which isn’t a bad thing. It takes place in my current residence of Munich, Germany, during the infamous hostage-Olympics. The film raises the ethical question of what to show and what not to show on television regarding violence, but it wouldn’t take long for “if it bleeds it leads” to become the norm.
Plot bio: During the 1972 Munich Olympics, an American broadcasting team is thrust from covering sports to reporting a dramatic hostage situation involving Israeli athletes. A young producer, unexpectedly leading the live broadcast, faces difficult decisions as time runs out, rumors spread, and the hostages’ lives hang in the balance.
Releases in Germany in January.
