Each week I provide a somewhat-curated list of films to see in cinemas. Meant as more of a resource than a weekly essay, you can refer to this series whenever you feel like going to the movies. Also, can check out previous weeks’ selections because those films might still be in theaters.
Recommendation of the week
No Other Land (Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Yuval Abraham, and Rachel Szor)
is finally getting a limited release in the US! I wrote about this two months ago; it is still a must must must see, being easily one of the three best films of the year. The film was nominated for an Oscar last week and two days later, Basel Adra, one of the directors and main subjects of the film, watched Israeli settlers once again illegally occupying his community in Masafer Yatta, West Bank. His caption from the video:
NOW, 2 days after No Other Land was nominated for an Oscar, settlers are invading my community, Masafer Yatta, burning and breaking homes. I'm honored for the nom but we're being erased while Trump lifted US settler sanctions. Do people in Hollywood care? Please don't be silent.
No Other Land is also still playing in select German kinos in most cities.
German releases
The Brutalist (Brady Corbet)
is a current Oscar frontrunner, but worth seeing on its own merits. I have mixed thoughts over it, but overall very positive about it after having an amazing Venice film festival experience with it. I wrote about The Brutalist for its American release.
Playing in most cities and most countries; worth going out of your way seeing on the biggest screen possible to take advantage of its VistaVision.
Babygirl (Halina Reijn)
is an erotic thriller starring Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson. That should be enough. Also wrote about it last month.
