What to watch in cinemas this week | Jan. 16–22
I'm Still Here, One of Them Days, A Real Pain, and Juror #2.
Each week I provide a somewhat-curated list of films to see in cinemas. Meant as more of a resource than weekly essay, you can refer to this series whenever you feel like going to the movies. Also, can check out previous weeks’ selections because those films might still be in theaters.
Recommendation of the week
I’m Still Here (Walter Salles)
was my fifth favorite viewing at the Venice film festival. And it’s star, Fernanda Torres, won the best actress Golden Globe over Pamela Anderson, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Tilda Swinton, and Kate Winslet. I’m Still Here will get more attention heading to the Oscars, and especially with the help from extremely online Brazilians.
Plot bio: In the early 1970s, the military dictatorship in Brazil reaches its height. The Paiva family - Rubens, Eunice, and their five children - live in a beachside house in Rio, open to all their friends. One day, Rubens is taken for questioning and does not return.
My initial review-reaction: “Very effective, doesn't indulge in the drama/tragedy too much given the real life subject matter and consequences, but also doesn't provide much interesting revelation we wouldn't have guessed from the beginning.”
American releases
One of Them Days (Lawrence Lamont)
looks fun. Stars Keke Palmer and SZA. That’s all I know.
Plot bio: Best friends and roommates Dreux and Alyssa are about to have One of Them Days. When they discover Alyssa’s boyfriend has blown their rent money, the duo finds themselves going to extremes in a comical race against the clock to avoid eviction and keep their friendship intact.
German releases
A Real Pain (Jessie Eisenberg)
is the beginning of the American critically-acclaimed awards season trickle-down, which includes the film below. I wrote about this film, as well as the next one, back in October. It’s great!
Juror #2 (Clint Eastwood)
might be Eastwood’s final theatrical release, why would you want to miss that?
